The State Central Library West Bengal, under the Library Ministry of the Govt of WB, Kolkata originally functioned as a Central Reference Library in the Campus of the Rabindra Bharati University, B T Road, Kolkata. In 1996 it shifted to its new building at P-1-17, CIT Sch VIIM, VIP Road, Opp ESI Hospital, Kankurgachi, Kolkata 700054.
West Bengal is the only state in India which has an independent Library Ministry having a Directorate of Library Services, connected to the Ministry of Mass Education Extension, Govt of WB, Bikash Bhavan, Bidhannagar, Kolkata.
This Library is the apex body in the library system of the State of West Bengal which covers hundreds of District & Rural Libraries as well as aided private libraries.
The ground floor accommodates (i) the Journal section, (ii) a Cyber unit, (iii) a Children's Library and (iv) Braille & Talking Book (Digital) Section for the Blind and the Vision Impaired citizens managed by the Society for the Visually Handicapped (SVH), a registered non-Government voluntary organization, Kolkata.
Second & the third floor accommodate Reading Room & Lending Section along with other facilities for users. Fourth floor has a spacious auditorium attached to a mini Conference Room.
Admission to this Library is free for all subject to submission of authentic testimonials.
